Traders shut up shop to drill home a result

WELLINGBOROUGH Traders’Association showed some nifty footwork to win a unique football match 1-0. Last Friday, a group representing the Association took on a team of workmen from MGWSP Northamptonshire Highways in Silver Street.

MGSWP are carrying out improvement work by creating a new bus lane and pavements in Sheep Street and Silver Street and are expected to finish by September. Traders in this part of town are up in arms as they claim their businesses have seen trade slump by 60 per cent due to the work. They’re trying to encourage people back into the streets and to make them aware it is business as usual. mgswp1.jpg

Chairman of the Association, Mark Jones, said: “All of us have got businesses in Sheep Street. The whole point is getting people back in the street and reminding them the street is open. “If we can play a football match then people can certainly come here and shop. “We want to get people back into the street and shopping. “Holding the football match was a way of doing this.”

PGR Construction Come to Local Charities Aid

MNT1-11-06-10-KC-20.JPGPGR Construction, whilst performing improvement works in the town centre of Wellingborough came to the aid of the local charity shops by accepting donations on behalf of the organisations .

PGR Construction employees are collecting donations from the public at the bottom of the street where the works are taking place from 9.00a.m. to 4.00 p.m. every Friday.

Improvement works in the town centre are to improve pedestrian access and create a bus lane, however, essential work has hampered trade due to poor access whilst the works are carried out.

Danielle Petter, area manager of Scope said “ We have seen a downturn in donations and we are also not seeing as many customers because they perhaps think that we are closed.”

Bobby Jackson, Assistant Manager at the British Red Cross Shop said “ Normally People just pull up outside for a couple of minutes and unload any donations. But it is good news if it happens and the workmen collect the donations.”
