Project Overview

Client: Kier Highways
Sector: Highways & Infrastructure
Location: A6, Burton Latimer, junction with Higham Road
Duration: 8 weeks (July – September)

The Project

The A6 through Burton Latimer is a busy and well-used route, and when Kier Highways required a specialist civils contractor to deliver a new signalised crossing point at the junction with Higham Road, they appointed PGR Construction, drawing on our previous working relationship and confidence in our ability to perform in a live highway environment.

Our scope covered the full civils package for the scheme. This included all groundworks, kerbing, signal sockets, ducting for both traffic signals and street lighting, new pedestrian crossing points, an improved footpath on the southbound carriageway, and a new maintenance bay at the top of Higham Road, a comprehensive package of works across a 5,425m² site, completed in eight weeks.

Working in a Live Environment

Delivering highway works on a busy A-road demands careful programme management and a team experienced in working safely around live traffic and pedestrian movements. A significant challenge on this scheme was the volume of existing underground services in the area, which meant a large proportion of excavations had to be carried out using vacuum excavation (vac-ex) equipment to safely expose and work around them without risk of damage.

Rather than slowing the programme, PGR’s experienced team adapted efficiently — using vac-ex as standard practice across the affected areas and maintaining progress throughout. The project was completed ahead of schedule, with both the designers and the client commenting positively on the quality of the finished works.

What the Client Said

“I just wanted to drop you a line to say a huge thank you to you and the PGR crews that worked on the A6 Burton Latimer project. Even with the various issues we had on site, you and your guys did a fantastic job to finish ahead of programme for your elements of the works. Both the designers and client have commented on how good the site looks and it’s clear that all involved at PGR worked hard to achieve this. Thank you all!” — Kier Highways

Sustainability

In line with our environmental commitments, energy-efficient welfare facilities from Reactive Hire were used throughout the project, reducing the environmental footprint of our site operations.

Outcome

The A6 Burton Latimer scheme is a strong example of PGR’s ability to deliver technically demanding highway works safely, efficiently and ahead of programme. Our existing experience with ducting and signal infrastructure, combined with our practical approach to problem-solving on site, meant we were well placed to absorb the challenges and still exceed expectations — reinforcing an ongoing and trusted relationship with Kier Highways.
