Project Overview
Completion of a new signalised junction on the busy A6 through Irthlingborough.
As part of the A6 safety scheme at Irthlingborough, PGR Construction have recently been busy on safety improvements and infrastructure upgrades.
We completed all groundworks and civils related work for the installation of new traffic signals on the A6 at the junction with Station Road. The scope of works also included:
- Completion of ducting, retention sockets, chambers and loop boxes to the new signalised junction
- Resurfacing of public footway on the A6 Northbound side
- Improved access to the public right of way
- Installed new concrete, post and rail barrier on the Northbound side
- Installed new, large directional signage
This scheme is part of a series of essential safety and structural upgrades in North Northamptonshire.
PGR Construction were appointed by Kier Highways, part of the Kier Group, who we have successfully worked in partnership with on previous, similar projects.
Safe and efficient working
There were many underground services along the A6 which proved to be a challenge during the initial groundworks stage. The PGR team had to be extremely mindful of these and cautious when operating vehicles and machinery.
The excavation work was completed with a vacuum excavator (vac-ex) to help with safe digging. The vac-ex is a non-destructive digging method specifically designed to uncover buried infrastructure without the risk of damaging vital services. The vac-ex machine enabled the team to safely dig and work effectively throughout this A6 project.
What the Client said
“Once again big THANK YOUs to AK and the guys for all their hard work on site.”
Sustainability
In line with our environmental commitments, energy-efficient welfare facilities from Reactive Hire were used throughout the project, reducing the environmental footprint of our site operations.
In addition, no muck away was removed from site during this project. Instead, all surplus materials remained on-site and were re-used.
