Funded by Peterborough City Council, this essential maintenance programme involved upgrading pedestrian routes along Saxon Road to ensure they remain safe and accessible for the future.
This scheme was undertaken in just under 20 weeks and the scope of PGR works included:
- Removing and replacing existing paved slabs and resurfacing with a modern tarmac finish
- Installation of all new kerbing along the edge of the footway parking
- Construction of new planters
- Bollard installation as a parking deterrent
- New tactile crossing points
PGR Construction were appointed by the M Group and the completed scheme involved resurfacing of a 2,100m footway.
Improved footways for the future
Peterborough City Council is undertaking several major footway and cycleway improvement projects across the city to enhance public safety, accessibility and to promote active travel.
PGR have worked closely with the M Group on many projects and were chosen for this footways project due to our previous, extensive experience and competitive pricing.
The Saxon Road project was staged over 2 phases, in the first half of 2026, and we successfully replaced the old paving slabs with a tarmac finish as well as upgrading the kerbs, bollards and crossing points.
Overcoming challenges
Due to the inevitable underground services, a lot of the excavation work needed to be completed slowly and carefully with a vacuum excavator (vac-ex). The vac-ex is a non-destructive digging method specifically designed to uncover buried infrastructure without the risk of damaging vital services.
The nearby school was also a major consideration throughout the project. We had to undertake the various works in multiple stages in order to prevent any disturbance to the school community.
